Animals, just like humans, must be vaccinated against harmful diseases, as well as treated for parasites on a regular basis. Not only does it save the life of the animal, it also saves the farmer or producer thousands of dollars in lost profits due to death or loss of productivity. This is a balancing act for most animal producers. The high costs of vaccines and dewormers have to be carefully weighed in the farmers decision, as well as potential harm to humans who may consume products from the animals.
This assignment fulfills:
Module Objective 1: You will have described an animal health program of vaccination and parasite control.
Student Learning Outcome 2: You will have explained the relationship of science and animal production through the studies of biotechnology, technology, genetics, physiology, nutrition, and health.
Student Learning Outcome 5: You will have recognized the requirements of production animals, and the benefits of proper care, nutrition, genetics, and environment to the animals productivity levels.
In this assignment, you will choose a species of animal (swine) and research proper vaccination and deworming protocols for that species.
Then, write a 2-3 page paper about the protocol, providing examples of vaccines and dewormers along with costs and risks to the animal and potential risks to humans of each product.
Address the following questions within your paper:
1. Give a brief description of a vaccination/deworming protocol, including how often it must be administered.
2. Give examples of vaccines and dewormers that could potentially be used.
3. Give the possible costs of each vaccines and dewormer.
4. Give the possible risks of each vaccine and dewormer to the animal and possibly to humans.
You will also need to reference at least one other resource. This can be an Internet resource except for Wikipedia. Please make sure to cite all work referenced.
