Select one the cases below:
The Vietnam War (1945-1975)
The American Revolutionary War (1775-1783)
The Soviet War in Afghanistan (1979-1989)
The Cuban Revolution (1956-1959)
The Chinese Communist Insurgency (1927-1937) and Civil War (1945-1949)
Each case represents a “successful” insurgency defined as “a protracted struggle conducted methodically in order to attain the overthrow of an existing order.”
Gallula author of Counterinsurgency Warfare argues the following variables associated with a successful insurgency:
1. Necessity of a cause 2. Strategic criteria of a cause 3. The nature of the cause 4. Tactical manipulation of the cause.
Your analytical task is to break down one of the successful insurgencies below, showing how each of the prerequisites was met (or not), and why each was important to the specific success of your case. To be clear, your task is NOT to provide a historical overview of the case. Rather, you should seek to develop a critical summary of the insurgency from the perspective of the variables listed above. The goal of that summary should be to clearly and succinctly explain why the specific insurgency was a success.
