For this assignment, you will explore the social responsibility of three major corporations and how it relates to their advertising. After all, as you learned, social responsibility motivates a business to perform a useful function within society ad to make its impact on society positive rather than negative. Choose a company you are interested in (except the ones not allowed, listed at the end)
Obviously, this is something all companies are striving (at least in theory) to achieve! You will examine three companies and see how they are faring in this goal.
*this is not a paper about ssales promotion (ex: buy one, get one free – is NOT social responsiblity that is sales promotion! Make sure you know what you are looking for first)
First, choose three large, well-known corporations, all of which should have a web presence. (In other words, the corner hardware store is not an option here even if they have a website)
Go to their websites and see how they appear to using social responsibility in their advertising efforts. Do an online search (meaning go to sites which are NOT their site) about these companies and see how the media has responded to their efforts (this is where it is crucial to use a large company, there will be little to read about from a small one).
Integrate these findings into a 3-5 double spaced page paper (approx one page per company, but maybe more) which clearly uses concepts from your text, as well as the findings you came across in your research. By reading your paper, it should be obvious you read the book, not just put in your thoughts on the topic. You are welcome to add opinions, but they need to be backed up by the book topics, this is not an opinion paper.
Be sure to have at least three other sources for your paper so ONE extra for each company. (For example, if you came across a Wall Street Journal article detailing the social responsibility of Target, and Target was one of your three companies selected, this article would be a source.) The Target website would NOT be a source although you would have been there! You will probably have MORE than one per company, but that is the MINIMUM.
Use proper bibliographical format to list your sources. Papers with no sources will lose significant points! As always, spelling and grammar are part of your grade. The bibliography page is an additional page to your paper, not part of the 3-5 page guideline. Go to bib.com or other sites to help you if you don’t make bibliographies frequently, the site makes it very easy to format. AP or MLA style is fine. AP is better in advertising, but if you know MLA it’s ok by me.
You may NOT use the following companies:
Starbucks, Nike, Apple.
If you do, you will lose points. They are too broad in scope to do well in this paper and are overdone. Be more creative!!
