Assignment: Write an extended definition essay of the idea or concept of work. Consider carefully what your readers already know about this topic and how your essay might add to what they know.
Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to inform by fully explaining your definition of work. To succeed, you must explain the concept simply, without jargon or other confusing language. Feel free to be creative with your definition, however. Remember that the best way to explain something unfamiliar is to compare it to something that is familiar. While the primary purpose is to inform, your paper can also be creative. Please be sure to reference at least one of the pieces from Tales of Two Americas.
Format: MLA format (Check out Writer’s Reference for a sample MLA essay.) The essay should be three pages, double-spaced. Use a MLA heading. Also include a title on the first page. Be sure to double space everything and have one-inch margins all the way around. Use Times New Roman font in 12 pt.
Sources: Be aware that you will be incorporating sources into your paper. You must properly cite these sources both within the text when applicable and on a Works Cited page at the end of your paper. You need two outside sources and use at least one of the four pieces we’ve read from Tales of Two Americas. You will need a minimum of three sources. Please do not use more than five.
Research: You will need to use two outside sources for this assignment, neither one of which may be a dictionary or encyclopedia. Popular articles can work. You can also check out the library database for a scholarly resource. It’s up to you what you’d like to incorporate into your research.
Grading: This essay will be evaluated in four areas: Content, Organization, Style, and Use of Sources.
